Leadership Education in Action to Promote Safety (LEAPS) For Young Workers Academy

A one-day conference held in the Boston, LEAPS is for teens throughout Massachusetts who have an interest in health and safety in the workplace. Teens are encouraged to create teams of 4-6 youth and also have an adult advisor who will attend the Academy with them. Meals are provided for all who attend.

At LEAPS, youth engage in workshops led by our teen Peer Leaders on health and safety in the workplace, workplace violence prevention, worker safety, workers’ rights, sexual harassment in the workplace, youth & union organizing, and community action. We also assist teams with creating action plans from the topics presented at the Academy to take back to their communities and implement. Past plans have included: Brochures and public service announcements played in high schools on health and safety, “health & safety” fashion shows to educate peers about different jobs’ personal protective gear, and resource tables at high schools.

This year the Annual LEAPS Conference will be held in February, in Dorchester, MA and will be hosted by Local Union 1199 SEIU. 1199 is located at 150 Mount Vernon St. Dorchester, MA 02125.
