Educate Yourself on Modern Slavery

January is Human Trafficking Prevention Month, and MassCOSH’s newest partnership with Massachusetts Attorney General  Maura Healey aims to bring labor trafficking out of the shadows.

Attorney Healey’s office released an important Public Service Announcement on recognizing potential signs of labor trafficking that MassCOSH is helping to distribute. Labor trafficking, a form of modern-day slavery in which individuals perform labor or services through the use of force, fraud, or coercion and it can happen anywhere, in plain sight. Perpetrators may prey on victims’ immigration status, debts, or language barriers, disturbing tactics MassCOSH’s Worker Center has seen used by employers far too many times. We have seen workers' passports or ID documents held by employers, a failure to pay worker wages owed or wages reduced to unlawful levels in the name of paying back a debt.
