Health and Safety Trainer
 
The Massachusetts Coalition for Occupational Safety and Health (MassCOSH) is a nonprofit organization that educates and mobilizes workers, unions, and community activists to advocate for and promote a healthy and safe workplace.  MassCOSH is an exciting and growing organization with a diverse, committed staff that work as a team.
 
The New England Consortium (TNEC) is the region's model Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) Worker Health and Safety training organization.  Since 1987, TNEC has provided dynamic hands-on, participatory health and safety training.  TNEC is one of 20 programs administered by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) Worker Education Program.  TNEC is based in the School of Health and Environment at the University Of Massachusetts – Lowell.  Five of New England’s coalitions for occupational safety and health (COSH groups) and Civil Service Employees Association Local 1000 (CSEA) of New York are partnering members of TNEC. 
 
Description:
MassCOSH seeks to hire a full time trainer to develop and deliver health and safety training, support workers’ leadership development around health and safety, and conduct outreach to unions to strengthen MassCOSH’s relationships and promote membership.  Preference will be given to candidates who have expertise in: worker health & safety, safety processes covered by OSHA 1910.120 hazardous waste and emergency response (HAZWOPER) regulations, work environment hazards and adult participatory / popular education. The Health & Safety Trainer helps to lead MassCOSH in meeting its goals for providing worker-oriented training, building the regional health and safety movement and developing working relationships with labor, environmental organizations, government and business.
 
Duties:
Primary responsibilities include:

  • Prepare for, organize and conduct hands-on, participatory health and safety training educational sessions that introduce workers to resources and rights they can use to identify, prevent and address health and safety concerns.    Working as part of a multi-trainer team in collaboration with the New England Consortium, offer 43 training days of OSHA 10-h Construction, confined space, HAZWOPER and other courses, using a popular education approach.
  • Lead safety training modules, hands on demonstrations, verification and testing of safe and proper use of equipment and monitoring the effectiveness of the training
  • Develop proficiency in the understanding, use of and maintenance of equipment used in training courses as well as equipment, devices and supplies used in the field of environmental services, hazardous materials management, clean-up and emergency response.
  • Travel to courses, both in and out of state, including overnight and multi-day sessions, meetings, conferences, seminars, or other meetings
  • Conduct outreach to unions, workers, and community organizations and educate them about MassCOSH’s training and technical assistance resources and the benefits of membership.
  • Provide support and encouragement to union shop floor members who are willing to become leaders in promoting health and safety, both within their bargaining unit and more broadly.
  • Participate in agency-wide program efforts that engage the community in health and safety such as Workers Memorial Day and MassCOSH Annual Event.

 
Additional responsibilities will include:
 

  • Achieve and maintain appropriate professional credentials and certifications
  • Participate in course & trainer evaluation
  • Participate in curriculum development and revision for TNEC courses. This includes course materials such as manuals, computer based training, audio visual, and other training aids, and instructors’ guides

 
Qualifications:
 
Excellent facilitation, written and oral communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
Experience providing training to workers and adult learners, using popular education/interactive approaches
Experience in and strong commitment to workers rights and unions
Ability to work effectively with diverse groups
Must demonstrate leadership quality and be able to work with minimal supervision
Bi-lingual Spanish or Portuguese a plus
Experience with environmental or health & safety organizations a plus
 
Credentials
 

  • Must possess a valid driver license and have a means of transportation to various training locations.
  • A BS/BA degree in a related field and/or five years practical and training experience
  • Qualifications include experience in one or more of the following: public health, industrial hygiene, hazardous waste cleanup and worker health education
  • Competence with spoken English required.  Strong writing/editing skills and computer competence required

 
 
Salary: $46,725/year plus 100% individual health and individual dental, 403B.
